As far as I know, the shards are just as real as those that Yima gifts her followers. [Are those shards real? He doesn’t actually know, but that’s not the point, and he’s not going to think too hard about it right now.] But they are also… tainted. Any other gifted shards in the possession of those they are delivered to will be damaged by their proximity. Possibly destroyed.
[Considering this will probably make whoever delivered the tainted shards to these people Enemy Number 1 to them, he doesn’t want the trail to lead back to him (or anyone else in Meridian, frankly).]
