FANE
Divinity Original Sin 2 CANON ~18000 AGE Meridian FACTION Tier 1 HARMONIZATION LEVEL
Act 2, before meeting Aetera CANON POINT Male (He/Him) GENDER Savant ASPECT Tier 0 DISCORD LEVEL
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Fane is, well.

A skeleton.

That about covers it.

This is completely accurate and true, but more seriously in terms of appearance, Fane is a skeleton that looks rather close to a human skeleton, but there are some key differences. There are bony protrusions on his skull as well as divots that are very unusual, and in the center of his forehead is a gem inlaid in gold—The gem being his Shard, naturally. This is part of his body (save for the Shard), and is seemingly fused to the bone like he was born that way. Here’s a visual! His eyes also glow with a constant teal light, and the center focus of this odd light seems to match his gaze, were he to have eyes. These lights move and his jaw will move alongside talking, but otherwise his features are, unsurprisingly, unchanging and devoid of expression.

The rest of his body is a normal human-appearing skeleton. However, he usually hides the rest of his bony form with thick, layered, and luxurious clothes. He likes to be well dressed! By necessity, these outfits always include a hood, at least until he gets a way to don a disguise to avoid being harassed by primitives. Ugh.

SHARD
The large, purple gem in the center of his forehead. Fane already comes with a Shard pre-loaded from canon, how nice for him.

ASPECT TATTOO
A small mark that looks like it was seared directly into bone. It's located on the back of his left hand.

PERSONALITY & BACKGROUND
Fane is an Eternal, a race of people in Divinity that no one has heard of, and the only remainders of their existence are the tributes to the Gods themselves. The remainders of Fane's race seemed to have ascended to Godhood, leaving him in a world full of strange people and wanting to learn what happened to his people. This is the first thing that people would notice about Fane—He's very naturally curious and inquisitive. He's a scholar first and foremost, and is an avid lover of knowledge and its pursuits. However, Fane is also a scholar on the morally questionably side of things. The reason his people are gone is his fault. He was experimenting with the energy that holds their universe together, and by revealing this information to some of his people, they were all lost in the process. He'll pursue a goal and knowledge to its very end, and he's not always good at considering the consequences of what that might mean.

Fane is also very much pretentious and looks down on the other races. The Eternals were so much more than the current races are, and he laments that people would have degraded in such a way... And doesn't hesitate to tell people so. He doesn't understand these new races of people, and has a similar curiosity towards them like one would an interesting research subject. He'll invade their personal space to poke at their skin, ask them invasive questions, and generally be condescending when he thinks they're doing or saying something that an Eternal would never do.

But overall, Fane is a surprisingly kind and gentle person. It just takes him getting over himself to get to that. He had a family that he loves and laments their loss, and truly loves his people, which is why he joins the quest to figure out just what happened to them all. He's passionate, but it's unfortunately sometimes to the point of naïveté and blindness to other peoples' feelings and intentions.

UNDEAD Fane is undead, with all of the benefits and downsides that comes with that! Fane isn’t capable of eating, breathing, or any other function that requires pesky little organs, including senses other than hearing and sight, which are covered by his innate magic. He can walk leisurely at the bottom of an ocean without a problem, and his bones can be separated without killing him (though he’d be very cross, as he can’t put himself back together). He can be killed by enough damage to his skull, that said.

For those able to sense such things, Fane is skeleton animated by magic, but not reanimated. Fane is from a race of people that are truly immortal. He becomes a skeleton because he was imprisoned in a tomb for many thousands of years. Without any sustenance whatsoever, all of his flesh essentially rotted away and left the skeleton and what’s essentially his soul behind. How nice!

Also, as a fun, canon-specific little caveat, Fane doesn’t benefit from magical healing or potions—they actually hurt him! Instead, poisons heal him. Why? Great question, ask Larian.
SOURCERER Fane is able to wield a form of magic that’s very powerful (but also very taboo) called Source magic. Source is the energy that flows through his world, but when it’s used, there’s a danger that it will cause a sort of ripple in reality that draws monsters from the Void. Sourcerers are hunted down and killed in his world because of the innate danger that using this magic presents. However, Fane is not able to use Sourcery freely in Kenos… Unless he takes drastic measures. Fane’s Source-centric skills are as follows:

  • Source Vampirism: We have to start with the drastic measures, obviously. Fane is able to drain the life energy from the soul itself. If used on a living person, this would severely tap their vitality, but wouldn’t kill them. If they were fighting at say 100% before, it would drain them down in 25% increments until they passed out. However, if Fane were to use this ability on the recently deceased, he would very literally consume and destroy their soul.

Fane must obtain Source before he can use any other skill below. To make things simple and not have to track Source Points like I’m in the game, I’m simplifying all of these skills to only require one use of Source Vampirism.
  • Bless: Because Source is innate life energy, he can channel that energy to imbue an object or surface with that powerful, near divine energy. This can create fancy surfaces with fancy properties, but honestly he’s not likely to do this, so don’t worry about it. But he can.
  • Spirit Vision: While the souls of the departed normally aren’t visible, Fane can channel Source to be able to perceive and interact with them for one full day.
  • Chain Lightning: Much like the Dungeons and Dragons spell of the same name, Fane picks a target as the origin for a bolt of electricity which can then fork out to multiple nearby targets. Using this spell drains quite a bit of Fane’s magical stamina along with requiring Source.
  • Thunderstorm: Fane creates a violent storm in the sky above which rains down thunderbolts. He’s able to avoid hitting allies with this spell, but otherwise it’s random and could cause damage to, say, buildings. Using this spell drains most of Fane’s magical stamina along with requiring Source.
Whenever Fane uses as spell that requires Source, there is a chance that it will summon monsters attracted to the energy of these powerful spells that use life itself. This will just be used if it's fun for a thread, though!
AEROTHURGY A school of magic centered around manipulating wind and lightning. Fane knows the following spells:

  • Nether Swap: Forces two people or objects to swap places, so long as Fane can see them.
  • Pressure Spike: Raises the air pressure of an area that Fane can see. This will cause some damage to any person within the spell, condense clouds, and douse fire, but isn’t fatal. Feels bad, though!
  • Superconductor: Fane gathers electrical energy in himself, then releases it in an electrical explosion that will shock anyone nearby.
  • Teleportation: So long as Fane can see an object or person, he can teleport them anywhere he chooses. However, the distance is limited by his physical strength which is. Not great. He could teleport a person several yards away at max, and anything heavier than that is likely to be impossible for him.
  • Tornado: Summons a small tornado. Fane is not able to control its path, and it’s not strong enough to pick up a person, but can cause damage otherwise and make it very hard to see or stand up.
  • Vacuum Touch: Fane touches a person or surface and creates a vacuum centered around them. The vacuum will follow the person or object, so Fane’s casting of the spell will have to be disrupted to end it.
NECROMANCY Oh, how original, the skeleton knows necromancy. Anyways, Fane knows the following spells:

  • Death Wish: A spell that empowers those close to death. The more injured someone is, the more they’ll find themselves empowered by this spell that increases their strength and effectiveness of attacks proportionally. For example, if someone were to be proverbially sitting at 3/10 HP, they would find themselves to be 70% stronger than normal.
  • Mosquito Swarm: Perhaps the most dastardly spell ever created. Fane summons a huge swarm of magical mosquitos that will bite and drain the blood from a target. The more blood they drain, the more vitality is magically transferred to Fane.
  • Living on the Edge: When empowered by this spell, the recipient is not capable of dying for five minutes, no matter how mortal their injuries may be. However, when the spell ends, they would not be healed of these injuries. That’s someone else’s job.
  • Raise Bone Widow: Fane summons a friend 😊 AKA a horrible spider monster made of bones. CW for arachnophobia but here’s a gif. Isn’t he cute! Don’t ask where the bones come from!
  • Shackles of Pain: Ghostly magical chains reach out to connect Fane to a target. Any injury he receives, they also receive. This effect lasts until Fane dies or chooses to dismiss it.
TELEKINESIS And finally, Fane is able to more objects with his mind aka magic. This is different from Nether Swap and Teleportation because those spells are rather instantaneous, but this spell allows for a smooth arc through the air, more or less. Fane is only able to move things up to about ~200 pounds. Anything else is going to be too heavy for him.

OUT OF CHARACTER
Writing Style: I prefer brackets, but will match a preferred style!

Backtagging: As long as a thread is continuing along at a good rate, I'll backtag for a very, very long time lmao

Threadhopping: Always good to ask first, but 95% of the time the answer will be "yes, absolutely"

Offensive Subjects: None for me!

IN CHARACTER
Physical Violence: Always good! On one hand Fane is a little harder to injure than a normal person because he's a magical skeleton, on the other hand, did you know the skeleton is on average only 15% of your body weight, which means Fane weighs probably like 25 pounds? Pick his ass up and throw him! He's a wizard, who cares!

Death/Dissipation: i mean he's already (un)dead so that's mean of you??? aka absolutely, just ask/let's plot it out first!

Physical Affection: Fane will be very surprised by it and a little flustered (nerd), but not opposed! He's very unlikely to initiate, however, but this is largely because of his own insecurity about being. Well. A skeleton.

Shipping/Sex: You may be surprised to learn that the answer is not only yes but a resounding yes. Fane is a romanceable companion in his game and has one of the softest, saddest romances. Who is brave enough for a monster boyfriend ♥

Mental/Communion: Always welcome! He'll talk your fucking ear off. My man is a professor and a chatty one!

Offensive Subjects: None!
